Hi All,

Ok, thanks for getting it together the last minute and almost filling the bus!

The weather will be partly sunny and 67-73 degrees..maybe about 20 celcius or so. Bring a light jacket or sweater/sweatshirt and comfortable shoes and your beach stuff. Bring one bag so it can go under your seat.

We leave on a yellow school bus (the cheapest way to go) at 9:30am, so get there at 9:15 so we can check you in. When you enter the T go to the left of the terminal and follow the road to rear lot where you will see the bus. You can park there all day for $5.75

Plesae don’t get lost and find the T before if you can.

We leave Ogunquit at 5:30pm and arrive back at Riversdie at 7pm.

I will have bottled water for you on the way up and maps and will explain some things.

This is a time for you to relax and see something different, take a walk along the beach, the cliff walk, explore the Dunes or just watch the waves.

I hope you have fun with your friends and maybe make some new ones.

Say hello to people on the bus and introduce yourself.

See you Sunday!

Ryan

A spare hour between two meetings today called for catching up on e-mails with a delicious latte made with locally roasted coffee at Carolina Roasters… nothing like the comforting smell and delicious taste of freshly roasted coffee to boost my productivity level! More often than not, I associate a place, its warmth and smell with events and people. That cup of coffee took me back to the days of the local French ladies monthly “petit-déjeuner”, where I used to enjoy getting to know other “French ex-pats” and bilingual moms.

I recalled a conversation about a shared passion for raising bilingual children, where we shared personal experiences about ways to achieve a native level of fluency in two to three languages. “It is important that each parent or caregiver speaks their native language only to the child, for consistency and to help the child associate a language with each person involved in their upbringing.”, said one mom. “That is what we did with our two children, and I was amazed to see that instead of learning things slower as some would expect, my children learned twice as much vocabulary as other children… If they learn about biology in one language, they then discuss it at home in the other!”

There has been a lot of research over the years about the benefits of exposing children to a foreign language a young age, with the formation of additional pathways in the brain and the ability to create any speech sounds (”phonèmes” in French) before the age of 3 years old. But the truth of the matter is, more and more parents understand that having the ability to speak a second language gives their children an advantage in the global marketplace. The question is: how can American parents expose their children to a foreign language if they only speak English or work full-time?

Simple: according to an article in The New York Times posted an article on August 18, 2010 entitled “Looking for Babysitters: Foreign Language a Must“, they hire bilingual childcare providers who can help their children learn a second language through study & play. Whether the children are already learning that language in school and parents needs an after-school care provider who can help with homework and practise, or they have infants and pre-schoolers whom they want to learn foreign sounds, the trend for bilingual care applies beyond New York City.

Una niñera bilingüe puede leer a sus niños en su lengua materna.

According to the article, although learning multiple languages simultaneously “doesn’t make kids smarter” (or maybe a little?), multilingual children:

learn additional languages more easily

do better at complex tasks like isolating information presented in confusing ways

do well in subjects like science and math due to the flexibility of their thinking

While some parents initially enrolled their children in classes to help them learn a second language, they all felt that wasn’t enough for their kids to become fluent. Hiring an in-home caregiver who spoke the language of their choice was a preferred choice for them.

The article mentions the options of foreign nannies and babysitters, but many American parents with those aspirations for their children also choose an au pair, due to:

the affordable cost

the flexibility of the hours

live-in childcare

cultural exchange for the whole family beyond just childcare

length of stay (committment of at least one year, with an option to extend for a second year)

What ways do you expose your children to a second language? A full immersion program in school, a baby-sitter, nanny or au pair?

Finding the right au pair for your family can be a very time-consuming endeavor; you may spend hours researching, reviewing, interviewing, checking references, etc. As a busy parent, you have limited time available. This is where we come in! When you apply with Cultural Care Au Pair, a qualified placement manager and I will help you every step of the way!

We offer 3 ways to match, which gives you the freedom to search how you want:

Search and Select: Families who prefer to search themselves for candidates can “Search and Select” independently. Families can search online through hundreds of available au pair profiles and express interest in specific candidates. Their placement manager will place up to three preferred candidates in their account to review exclusively.

Personalized, Consultative Matching: A family’s placement manager carefully selects applicants on a family’s behalf. Families are presented with up to three au pair candidates to review exclusively.

Consultative Matching: Families may schedule a consultative matching appointment with their placement manager. During this phone call, families will be able to review multiple candidates at once and get an overview of our current au pair pool. Families will be able to select up to three available candidates to review exclusively by the end of their appointment.

“Exclusively” means that the au pair is reserved for your family and that you are not competing against other families during the review process.

After you complete your application you will discuss what you are looking for in your au pair with your placement manager.

Requirements: These are criteria based on your application that we will have to find in your au pair candidate. If you have children under 2, you have a swimming-pool and you have a dog, we will need to make sure your au pair candidate is infant-qualified, is a good swimmer and is not allergic to pets. The requirements are the basic things you are needing vs. wanting in your au pair.

Preferences: These are criteria based on your affinities, family activities and likings, such as hobbies you may share with the au pair, places you like to travel to, activities you like to pursue or an interest you have in a specific culture or language. Some of these may be very important to you if your child is learning a specific second language, but some of these may also be secondary and enable you to be opened to multiple possibilities.

When discussing the au pair program, the first questions I usually answer are about the au pairs (background, qualifications, screening) and the arrival process (time frame, matching, program fees and payment options).

All participating host families must be:

Committed to cultural exchange and willing to welcome a young person from abroad into their home as a family member

Both parents must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents

The parent(s) require up to 45 hours per week of childcare

Able to provide a private bedroom

Available to attend at least one orientation meeting and family meeting per year

Willing to abide by the guidelines set forth by Cultural Care Au Pair and the U.S. Department of State.

Should the bedroom have a private bathroom?

While a private bathroom is a nice additional feature for an au pair, it is not a requirement. Your au pair can share the children’s bathroom, however, you can help to welcome your au pair by creating a separate shelf space for her to use. Also her own area to hang towels or keep styling tools will help to keep the kids away from her stuff.

Do au pairs have their own car?

Au pairs are 18 to 26 year-old students from abroad and will not have their own transportation. If your au pair is required to drive the children, a family car should be available for her to perform her duties. It will be important to give your au pair time to familiarize herself with driving your size car in your area. You should also let her know what your expectations are for personal care use (gas usage, distance, curfew) if available. Not all au pairs have access to a car for their off-time. You will be required to drive her or provide car access to one au pair meeting per month.

Do au pairs have a driver’s license?

Most au pairs have a driver’s license and their application will describe whether they are comfortable driving your children and driving in the USA. Although her international driver’s license will be valid for up to 90 days in South Carolina, you can encourage her to take the driving test at your local DMV as soon as possible. An American driver’s license will be best for use as I.D., to open a bank account and for adding your au pair to your car insurance.

These are some helpful hints to familiarize yourself with the au pair matching process, but, as always, please contact me at jill.marshall@lcc.culturalcare.com for any questions you may have.

It is that time of year again for the Annual New York Scavenger Hunt - Sunday September 12, 2010 .

We will meet at the New York City Public Library Steps at 5th Ave and 40th Street 9:30 am for LCC’S and 10 am for Au Pairs. We will be ending in a park on 26th street and 5th Ave called Madison Square Park. This information will be on the booklets that are distributed as well. It would be a great help that as au pairs arrive, you give them directions even if they are not in your group so that we can start in a timely manner and that we do not congregate on the steps. Please do not allow the au pairs to sit on the steps. Direct them to find their LCC. We will designate one or 2 staff members to gather and sign in any au pairs who do not have LCCs present.

When you have your au pairs sign in, please ask for a $1.00 donation to Kids First to participate Please collect the $1.00 dontation for Kids’ First and place it in the envelope I have provided. Remind them that CCAP will match our donation. Be sure to metning this with the event announcement. The envelope can be returned to me when we gather for announcements before dispersing. Please have your au pairs arrive on time! It takes some time to get them signed in and in their groups.

Specific Rules:

Booklets are not to be given out until 10:30 am.

Au Pairs should form teams of 4. Teams of more than 4 will not be eligble for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place. One booklet is given to each team of 4. New for this year, each booklet will have a number. Write that number on the hand of one of the team members. We will not call out the names of winners but rather the team number. We will use a white board to speed the process and eliminating the need to call out 4 names that maybe hard to hear.

Once the Scavenger Hunt starts each team will have to answer as many questions as possible and find as many items as possible in the time allowed (2 hours). If a question has multiple parts they must answer all parts to receive the point. All items collected must also be checked to get the point.

Extra points will be awared if they are wearing a cultural care t-shirt. - 1 point for each team member wearing the shirt ( up to 4 points)
5 Extra points will also be awarded if the group stops a family with young children and get them to answer a short survey and they supply the name plus phone number and mailing address or e-mail.

Teams need to be at the finish point on time or they will not qualify for a prize. We will stop accepting books at 12:30 sharp! Once at the finish point, groups will need to find an LCC to score the booklet. Once the booklets are scored a prize ceremony will be begin. Approx 1/3 of the participants will receive prizes!

Hello Amazing Au Pairs and Host Families!!

This Sunday is our outing to a favorite American past time, BASEBALL!!!!

Since we are going to an Angel game and it is a little bit of a drive, I would like to offer a ride to those of you who don’t want to drive all that way by yourself. I have room for a total of 8 and 2 spots are already taken (me and my son!). If you would like to ride with me, please let me know.

We will meet at the front gate at 11:45. Game starts at 12:35 so we need to all gather together and then buy our tickets together so we can sit together. If you feel more comfortable, we could also all meet at my house and then caravan up there so we don’t lose each other. Please let me know who of you would like to meet me at my house and who would like to meet us at the front gate of the stadium. I know that for those of you who are already north of me it will be easier to just meet there.

Also, in the email I sent to you about this meeting, I attached your Continuing Education homework and quiz, please let me know when you have read the take-home guide and completed the quiz. Since we are going to the game it will be difficult to have this meeting there, so I am trusting you all to study on your own!

I will give quiz you all when I see you!

Looking forward to seeing you all at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, CA this Sunday!

Here’s the address to the stadium:

2000 E. Gene Autry Way, Anaheim, CA 92806
